Zamfara Commissioner of Police Gives Strict Conditions over Protests

The Zamfara State Police Command Commissioner of Police, M. D. Shehu has given some stringent conditions for the planned nationwide protests against what the organizers call bad governance in the country.

The police commissioner said that the command would like to have details of the planners of the events so as to avoid what happened in Kenya. The people of the East African country are still protesting against President William Ruto, who has answered most of the demands of the people.

The spokesperson for the command released a statement on behalf of the commissioner.
ASP Yazid Abubakar in the statement said that the command recognized the constitutional rights of the people to stage a protest.

The statement said, “The police commissioner M D Shehu commended the stakeholders for their contributions to fighting crime and criminality in the state. However, the meeting focused on the potential risks associated with the planned protest, including violent undertones and sinister motives. Some groups have been advocating for violent protests, citing the recent events in Kenya as an example, which has raised concerns about their sincerity and potential for chaos.

“While acknowledging the constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest, the Command urges citizens to exercise caution and consider the timing and potential consequences of joining any protest group. We warn clandestine groups plotting to destabilize the state and hoodlums seeking to exploit protests for their criminal agendas that we will not tolerate any form of violence, destruction of property, or looting.

To facilitate a successful and hitch-free protest, we require groups planning to protest to provide the necessary details, including: proposed protest routes and assembly points; expected duration of the protest; names and contact details of protest leaders and organizers and designated routes and areas for the protest to avoid conflict with other activities

“We encourage all protesters to cooperate with the police, obey the law, and adhere to global best practices for peaceful assembly. We assure residents that they can go about their lawful activities and report any suspicious movements to the nearest police station for immediate action.”

“The stakeholders commended the Command’s efforts in reducing crime and criminality in the state and assured that they would not engage in any form of protest that may compromise public safety and order,” it added.
