Why I Hijacked Power from Buhari – ex Military President Babangida

0

A former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has revealed why he took over power from a former military head of state Muhammadu Buhari, a major general at that time.

Buhari had staged a coup to remove the first executive and democratically elected president Shehu Shagari from power on December 31, 1983 in a move that truncated the fragile democratic process of Nigeria.

But Buhari himself spent just two years in power as his chief of army staff Ibrahim Babangida removed him from power in yet another bloodless coup in the country.

Babangida explained in his autobiography, “A Journey in Service”. The book was launched in Abuja yesterday with top echelons making donations for the construction of a presidential library in Babangida’s honour.

In the book, which Online Parrot News has reviewed, Babangida said he became *increasingly dissatisfied with Buhari’s policies and leadership styles”.

Babangida didn’t immediately state the policies or the particular style of Buhari, who was absent at the book launch yesterday. He however said that the policies were “detrimental to the nation’s progress”. Therefore, Babangida in 1985 hijacked power from his boss, Buhari.
