Mathematically, Ethiopia is out of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). The East African side will among the first set of teams to crash out of the African football tournament.
Ethiopia has now played two matches just like other three teams in Group A of the competition. Others are host Cameroon, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde.
Ethiopia has lost the two matches and conceded 5 goals. It has only been able to score just one goal against host Cameroon.
It opened its competition when it played against Cape Verde, who started taking part in the competition in 2013. One goal was enough to dismiss Ethiopia in the encounter.
Its clash with Cameroon should have been an avenue to resuscitate its hope of stay in the competition for the knockout stage. It lost to Cameroon as well.
No matter what happens, only three teams can qualify from a group. The group winner and runner-up have automatic qualification.
Then the best losers will be picked from all the groups. Ethiopia may not be opportune to pick up a slot in the remaining competition. Having failed to make a point, Ethiopia has conceded more goals.
The East African side would face Burkina Faso in the last group match. Ethiopia may need to score at least six goals so as to keep the hope alive.
Already Ethiopia has 4 goals deficit. If it beats Burkina Faso with a wide margin of 4 goals, Ethiopia will move to either second or third depending on what happens between Cameroon and Cape Verde.
