Why are Igbo governors working against Kanu’s release?

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has been behind the bars since his surprising extradition from Kenya two years ago. The Muhammadu Buhari’s administration ensured it kept him in custody despite several court verdicts which ordered his release.

A former chieftain of the top Igbo sociocultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has explained that at least two governors from Southeastern Nigeria are working tirelessly against the release of the Biafra leader. IPOB remains a proscribed group in the country.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has made so many efforts to secure the release of the Igbo leader, Kanu from the custody of the Department of State Service. The efforts have met obstacles including from the governors of the land.

Okechukwu Isiguzoro explained that two incumbent governors, senators are among those working against Nnamdi Kanu. He has not mentioned the names of the governors.

He said, “Some political elites, including two Southeast governors, senators, and Igbo leaders, are working behind the scenes to ensure that Nnamdi Kanu is only transferred to Kuje Prison instead of being released outright, citing the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial elections.

“We call on President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu by dropping all charges against him and allowing him to immediately return to the United Kingdom after his release.”

If incarcerated Nnamdi Kanu is fighting the course of Igbo people, why are the elite in the land busy making moves to have him behind the bars? Does it mean the governors don’t want separation of Biafra from larger Nigeria?

Mr. Ifeanyi Ubah had to deny the accusation against him that he worked against Kanu. There have been several other instances.
