The federal government has finally declared bandits as terrorists. The declaration has also been gazetted by the government. But what happens next after the declaration? Can there be any different? Possibly no.
The federal government doesn’t appear to have the wherewithal to confront the bandits who often strike major northern states including Buhari’s Katsina.
The Attorney General and minister of justice Abubakar Malami was put under serious pressures to declare the bandits terrorists after a court had given the federal government its nod.
One may wonder what will happen after the federal government reluctantly took the bull by its horns. Nigerians should be cock sure that the security issues will continue nonstop. There are references.
The Boko Haram insurgents are considered terrorists. And they are often treated as such. Several years after the declaration had been made to tag the Islamists as terrorists, what progress has been made? Has that stopped the activities of the insurgents?
The president, Muhammadu Buhari, was in Borno capital few weeks ago. The Boko Haram terrorists still carried out attack close to the airport. What does that mean? The Boko Haram has not been totally or partially degraded as often claimed by the government.
What about the Indigenous People of Biafra in the eastern region? Of course, IPOB may have some genuine agitations compared to the bandits in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and Katsina. But the government had declared them as terrorists as well.
What exactly has the government been able to achieve in tackling the IPOB? It has been complicated security matters. Security posts, personnel, equipment are often targeted in the eastern region.
Truly, the government has come out openly, without more security measures, the declaration won’t have any effects. It will only aggravate the serious security situation in the northern region.
