The members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have revealed why they decided almost unanimously to impeach the speaker of the Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa.
Online Parrot News reported on Monday that 32 of the 40 lawmakers decided to impeach Obasa, who is representing Agege Constituency 1 from his office as the speaker of the state. They alleged that he engaged in gross misconduct and abuse of office.
At the Assembly complex, the lawmakers collectively addressed journalists and gave reasons for their decision to get rid of the speaker. Online Parrot News learned that he was scheming to become the state governor in 2027 when Babajide Sanwo-Olu would be done with his second term in office.
“It’s just a change of baton, it is only death that is constant, so change is inevitable.
“The members of parliament today decided to change the leadership of the House and you know that the constitution made it clear that the House has the power to regulate its proceedings.
“So the members of the House felt that they have had enough of Obasa and today we have unanimously agreed that Miranda should become the new Speaker of the House.
It was a resolution concurred to by all members of the parliament and so be it.
“As we speak all the principal officers have been dissolved and standing committees also stand dissolved.
“The House, as you have seen, have resolved to work together and ensure we move the parliament to the next level. We hold our constituents and Lagos State a duty of ensuring that the sanctity and integrity of the House is restored and that is why we all unanimously agreed to carry out this action to save our image and this state.”
The lawmakers have elected Hon Mojisola Metanda and she is now the first female speaker in the state.
