What Obi can’t tell northern voters
Mr Peter Obi can’t tell northern voters the exact thing they will like to hear from a presidential candidate coming from southern region. The northern elite are scared of candidates coming from the region considering the unconstitutional agitations from that axis.
Mr. Peter Obi is from Anambra State, one of the southeast states where unknown gunmen have either killed or kidnapped citizens. The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra is also terrorizing the area through its attacks on the security personnel and their barracks.
The people of Igbo extraction still holds the unattained republic dear to their hearts. They want to secede from the whole country to establish a place or country of their own. The IPOB does force the people to obey the order to stay at home most especially on Mondays.
The northerners know what it means to elect someone from that axis. The unity of the country will be at stake and the last thing a northerner will want is division of the nation. Hence, they will be skeptical of the choice of Peter Obi as the candidate.
The Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi can’t tell northern voters that he would crush the agitation and stop all forms of Biafra Republic agenda. He knows he will be offending millions of Igbo people, who constitute the largest percentage of his support base.
He has taken his campaign to both Katsina and Jigawa state, two core northern states in the northwest of the country. He talked at length to convince the crowds that came to identify with him.
He reeled out his plans for the country while appealing to the voters. Of all political promises, one thing that is paramount to the northern elite is the unity and oneness of Nigeria. Every other thing comes as secondary.
Peter Obi can’t take the risk. In fact, he has never shown clearly that he doesn’t have sympathy for the Igbo struggle for secession. The northern voters must have understudied his body language for a while now, perhaps expecting him to distance himself for the call for establishment of Biafra Republic.
