We’ll Go Bankrupt With New Minimum Wage – Governors

The 36 governors through their Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) have said that their respective states would go bankrupt if the newly proposed minimum wage stands. There have been back and forth between the federal government and the organized labour over a new minimum wage.

Just last week, the presidency decided to “step down” the proposal so as to allow more consultation. The labour has accused the government of intentionally frustrating the labour.

The report shows that several states including Abia, Benue, Osun, Ekiti, Gombe, Taraba, Kogi among others are not paying the current minimum wage of N30,000 and they rely almost solely on the allocation from the federal government to pay their bills.

For instance, in the report, Jigawa has 44,831 workers in its payroll and pays N2,795,662,113.02 as wages, and N345,987,843.12 as a pension, with a total sum of N3,141,649,956.14 monthly on recurrent expenditure.

The governors have repeatedly said that their are not financially viable to pay the sum of N62,000 being proposed by the federal government.
