The ruling party prepares for its convention, but there is an unnoticed coup in APC ahead of the convention. The exercise is supposed to hold this month. However, the political coup may stop the exercise.
The Niger State governor, Mr. Abubakar Bello stormed the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress. He appears to be at the top of the unnoticed coup in APC.
He entered the building and announced himself as the acting Chairman. Of course, the development upset several enthusiasts of the political party.
They wondered what had come over the caretaker committee chairman, Mai Mala Buni. There was no official announcement from the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party. So, the taking over became confusing.
The inquisitive journalists asked the Niger governor Bello about the development. He didn’t provide details. He only told them that he has become acting chairman of the party.
It is true that Mr. Mai Mala Buni isn’t in the country at this moment. Reports have it that he has travelled abroad to attend to his health. And he didn’t officially handed over to anyone.
The Niger State Governor is among the caretaker committee of the All Progressives Congress. The Premium Times reported exclusively that the APC governors forced Buhari to remove Mai Mala Buni.
Does the president have total authority or control over the party? The NEC is the supreme organ of the party. Even if there is a need to sack the Yobe State governor Buni, it should be the decision of the NEC.
The National Executive Council set up the committee in June, 2020. The step became necessary following the inglorious removal or sacking of erstwhile chairman Adams Oshiomhole.
If there is a need to sack Buni, the NEC ought to decide that. The Premium Times report further said that Mr. Buni is conniving with three other governors to frustrate the convention.
The national convention ought to have held more than a year ago. Even there is a rumour of an injunction to stop the convention. Hence, the APC governors lobbied Buhari to remove Buni.
The removal of Mala Buni is still clandestine. Hence it is an unnoticed coup in APC. The party may not be able to have the convention on the long run.
