Turkey and Syria: death toll reaches 20,000
Death toll in Turkey and Syria has reached 20,000 while authorities including rescue workers are still struggling to find victims and dead bodies.
Two powerful earthquakes of 7.8 magnitude struck the two neighbors on Monday. Earthquakes are not common in the Middle East region. That’s why the current natural disaster surprised several people across the world.
According to Al Jazeera, at least 16,000 people have died in the incident with several still trapped under the debris. Likewise Syria has reported at least 3,000 people.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has already declared a state of emergency in at least 10 provinces of the country. The country is still in mourning arising from the deadly earthquakes.
The United Nations has already sent relief materials to both Turkey and Syria. The materials have reportedly landed in the two countries.
