Who really wants Interior Minister Bunmi Tunji-Ojo down?
That’s the main question one should ask and require an answer. The interior minister Bunmi Tunji-Ojo is in the eye of the storm and he is going down just like his colleague Betta Edu, who was until her suspension in charge of the ministry of humanitarian affairs.
One of the exceptional ministries in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu is the interior minister. He has done what his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola failed to do in eight years. Nigerians can now get their passports with ease, he was able to clear lots of backlogs of passports.
He has started the process of decongesting the prisons across the country. The custom service and other agencies within the ministry are doing a very good job.
But a particular company linked to the minister, the New Planet Limited reportedly got more N400m (four hundred million naira) for just consultancy from the Betta Edu’s ministry. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo was on Channels Television to deny that he’s a director in the company.
He revealed that he resigned from the top job in the company in 2019 following his election into the lower chamber of the National Assembly. He tendered some papers to back his claim.
Yet there are calls for his head. Mr. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, an indigene of Akoko, Ondo State State was at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday. He was reportedly summoned by the president.
His loyalists and Nigerians who like his job in the ministry said that the minister has provoked some individuals in the immigration services. Their argument is that the bottlenecks he had cleared didn’t go down well with the officials, civil servants who benefit immensely from the sluggish and frustrating passport processing.
But the leak that now haunts the interior minister didn’t come from within his own ministry where the supposedly aggrieved officials are. Hence, it’s not likely true that the officials are working to bring him down.
Then who are after his fall?
