Osun Politics: Top Politician Dumps PDP For APC
A top leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress ahead of the next gubernatorial election scheduled for 2026.
Amidst acrimony and internal wranglings in the ruling party in Osun State, Prince Adelani Ajanaku has announced his departure from the PDP and embraced the APC.
Ajanaku, a prince from Gbongan, became popular in the PDP when he headed the factional primary election which produced Prince Dotun Babayemi as the gubernatorial candidate of the PDP for the last gubernatorial election in 2022. The national headquarters of the party rejected the primary election.
In a WhatsApp post sighted by Online Parrot News, Ajanaku said, “I, Prince Adelani Ajanaku is irrevocably committed and I totally align myself with the goals and aspirations of Omooba Dotun Babayemi and other esteemed foremost leaders, critical stakeholders and thousands of committed members in resolving to joining forces in our avowed mass movement from PDP to APC with a view to achieving, deepening and strengthening the overwhelming chances of APC in future elections across the state with a view to make life more abundant for the downtrodden and its citizens. Here, we have come and landed…”
The PDP at Gbongan had already expelled Babayemi for anti-party activities. He dragged both the party and Ademola Adeleke to court. The failure of the party leaders to achieve reconciliation paved the way for Babayemi’s loyalists to find their ways into the APC.
Babayemi himself was once a top member and chieftain of the APC. He dumped the party for the Action Democratic Party (ADP) ahead of the 2019 general elections in which he jostled for the seat of Osun West Senatorial District. He lost the election.
The ambitious politician from Gbongan himself has not officially defected to the APC, but the party is making moves to welcome him by setting up a committee to fast track his return to the party.
