Tinubu’s Government Is Dehumanizing Nigerians with Eviction in FCT – Amnesty International
President Bola Tinubu government’s use of ‘insecurity’ as an excuse to forcefully and violently evict FCT communities and hand over the land to private developers is an irony that must not be overlooked, as state-provided security is always non-existent in such communities.
The FCT authorities must halt these attacks on poor communities who are being punished for the government’s urban planning failures. The instability and uncertainty created by forced evictions are making their lives a misery — during the worst economic crisis in three decades.
These ruthless forced evictions going on in and around the FCT are just the most recent examples of a practice that has been going on in Nigeria — whereby the poor a violently rendered homeless and the land handed to the rich and the well connected.
The FCT administration’s ongoing evictions and demolition of houses is the most degradation of human dignity. Livelihoods are destroyed and children’s education disrupted. Forced evictions are illegal under international and regional human rights law.
