Tinubu Wants to Enrich Lagos and Impoverish North with Tax Reform – Zulum

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has reiterated his criticism against the tax reform being pushed by the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The professor had earlier condemned the bill and called for its withdrawal from the national assembly.

He said that the timing was wrong and that the bill could be in the assembly for up to 20 years just like the petroleum bill. He argued that the tax reform is not in the interest of the northern region, which would not be able to pay salaries if assented to.

He appeared on Channels Television yesterday night to continue his opposition against the bill. He remains the most outspoken governor against the reform which the Tinubu’s Government explained would help to bring justice to how the revenue is generated and shared among the tiers of the government.

Babagana Zulum, who was initially thought to be Tinubu’s running mate, said that the reform would favour only Lagos and Rivers State.

“On this tax issue, there are a lot of misconceptions. We felt that the VAT provision in the tax law. Based on the calculations that we did, only Lagos and Rivers States will benefit from this scheme.

“We did our own research and concluded that we would lose,” Zulum stated.

He added, “Why are we in a rush? We advised the Federal Government to take a pause and expunge some of the clauses that are inimical to Northern Nigeria.

“What we are saying is that give more time, let us do a deeper consultation to understand the nitty-gritty of this tax regime before passing it into law.”
