Tinubu’s 100 days in office: unpopular decision to remove subsidy

President Bola Tinubu got less than 40% of the votes cast in the last presidential election. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared him winner of the poll. He came to power on the mantra of “renewed hope” for the people of the country.

Amidst drama in campaign, hate speech, and politics of calmuny, he coasted home victory and Nigerians felt that a new dawn has come. 100 days after his inauguration, these are notable things he has done.

Removal of fuel subsidy didn’t really go down well with the people of the country. The resultant consequences of the decision to remove the subsidy are now on the economy and the livelihoods of the people. Inflation is soaring, unemployment is skyrocketing and Nigerians are groaning in pains.

Though called a courageous move, the removal of subsidy may have made Nigerians to miss former President Muhammadu Buhari. The current administration has called for patience while it fixes the economy and bring succor to the people of the country.

However, it doesn’t look like the government has specific plans for the revenue accrued from the removed subsidy. Of course, the government has released bags of rice to states and given loans and grants to the states as well. It’s unfortunate that little is what the so-called palliatives can do.

Apart from the much touted palliatives, there is no clear plan for the people. The only message has been the need to be patient. The sycophants won’t stop praising the decision to get rid of subsidy on petroleum. They simply wanted to make others see Tinubu’s administration in another image.

Before Buhari left power, he declared opened the Dangote Refinery. The promise was that it would start functioning fully by July. Two months later, Nigeria still imports petroleum, whose cost has more than tripled.
