The tax reform being pushed by President Bola Tinubu has caused yet another uproar in the upper chamber of the National Assembly. The presiding Senator and deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau announced the presence of Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to brief the Senate about the controversial bill.
Tinubu’s Government had argued that each state should earn as much as it generates and that it seeks to balance the sharing formula for the allocation. But this doesn’t sit down well with the northern leaders, governors and senators as they continue to argue against the bill.
Senator Jibrin told his colleagues that Oyedele was in the chamber to shed more lights on the bill as an expert in taxation. But Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi from Bauchi State was quick to say that his presence was unnecessary and he shouldn’t be given audience.
Ningi, who was once suspended, said that the Senate Committee on Appropriation can invite the tax expert if it wanted to.
Ali Ndume, a vocal critic of Tinubu, also opposed the proposed interaction. He said the Senate was done with the business of the day. He was visibly agitated.
