The Senate President has reacted to the issues and debates around the controversial tax reform bills presented for consideration and approval by the president, Bola Tinubu.
A number of political and traditional leaders mostly from the northern region have called for withdrawal of the bills. They argued that the reform would impoverish the region, which propelled Tinubu, the then APC candidate to victory.
In his reaction to a rumour that the bills have been withdrawn, Akpabio said that the Senate would discuss and approve any reform that is in the best interest of the country.
“The Senate cannot be bullied. Any reform we believe is in the best interest of Nigerians will proceed. These bills contain provisions aimed at benefiting the public.”
The Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele also cautioned against misinformation circulating on social media and in the press, urging the public to focus on verified facts.
He emphasized, “We have not suspended or withdrawn delib on the tax reform bills.
“Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic. These bills are executive communications, and only the executive has the authority to withdraw them. We remain resolute in fulfilling our legislative duties.”
Akpabio also reiterated the Senate’s independence, stating, “We do not take orders from anyone or any office, no matter how high-ranking.
He emphasized, “We have not suspended or withdrawn deliberations on the tax reform bills.
“Any attempt to intimidate the Senate is undemocratic. These bills are executive communications, and only the executive has the authority to withdraw them. We remain resolute in fulfilling our legislative duties.”
