Strike: will NLC make real its threat tomorrow?

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress has threatened to shut down the economic sector tomorrow as it embarks on a nationwide strike. The congress called for the two-day strike over the failure of the current administration to negotiate with it.

The regime of Bola Tinubu removed the fuel subsidy when he came to power on 29 May, 2023. Costs of living have been rising since that time. The NLC has made a series of demands for its members, and of course Nigerians.

But the federal government is yet to yield to the call of the congress for a negotiation. Hence, it decides to go on a warning strike. The industrial action will hold on Tuesday and Wednesday. The current minister of labour and productivity, Simon Lalong has called for a meeting with the NLC.

The labour union has reportedly snubbed the call.

The president himself, Bola Tinubu, has travelled to New Delhi, India for the G-20 summit. He intends to convince investors there.

But one particular practice of the NLC is to issue lots of threats only to withdraw from the planned strikes at the eleventh hour. This has made millions of Nigerians to lose confidence in the union.

After the National Executive Council meeting of the NLC on 31 August, the union decided to embark on the strike commencing tomorrow (Tuesday).
