The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has issued a stern warning to personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to desist from using his name and office to carry out illegal operations and intimidation of Nigerians.

Police officers often engage in shameful acts and they will still use the name of the police boss. It will all look like the IGP has sanctioned the operations. Whereas the IGP said that the conducts are unprofessional.

The police released a statement through the Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi on Saturday. The statement said that the IGP is aware of the unprofessional conducts of the officers and has urged members of the public to report erring personnel so they can face disciplinary actions.

The statement reads partly, “Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts. The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware, and approves of their illegal activities. As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities.”

The statement has asked Nigerians to report any illegal act or misconduct by the police officers to their bosses.

“We urge members of the public to report any misconduct by Police Officers to their superiors, the Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states or the Commissioner of Police in the state. Contact information for the CRU in all states has been published previously.”
