Sanwo-Olu & Obasa set for another fight

The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Speaker of the House of Assembly Mr. Mudasiru Obasa may be in for another round of fight.

Political terrain in Lagos State has become messy following the stepup of Bola Tinubu to the presidency. His assignment and business at the Presidential Villa have halted his influence in Lagos State politics. Or he doesn’t appear to have interest in it at all.

The rift between Sanwo-Olu and Obasa came to limelight fully when the Lagos State House of Assembly unprecedentedly rejected up to 50% of commissioner nominees. The administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu sent a list of 39 people as nominees to form the cabinet of the governor. But under Obasa’s watch, the assembly rejected 17.

State house correspondents asked Obasa why the nominees were rejected. He was unmoved, he simply replied that the rejection remained so.

Obasa didn’t stop at that, he rhetorically asked, “Do I look like someone who can be threatened?” He smiled after asking the question. But who exactly is threatening the speaker, one of the sit-tight lawmakers in Nigeria? He didn’t provide any further explanation. But there is more than meets the eye.

Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has remained quiet, refusing to exchange words with the speaker, whom he has to work with for the next three and a half years. Mudasiru Obasa warned the governor against taking drastic steps.

The speaker warned, “the man living in the glass house not to throw stones. If he throws stones, the house will be shattered”. There is no doubt that Mudasiru Obasa was referring to Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Interestingly, the state governor has sent another list of nominees to the house that Mudasiru Obasa heads. Mr. Akin Abayomi, the immediate past commissioner of health, was among the nominees the assembly rejected last month.

The powerful Governance Advisory Council has waded into the conflict between Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Mudasiru Obasa.
