Kenya’s President Ruto Suspends Plans To Increase Officials’ Salaries Amidst Protests
Kenya’s President William Ruto has suspended a plan to increase the salaries and allowances of the government officials as protest against his administration.
He had introduced a bill which would impose heavier taxes on the people, who are already grappling with inflation. That made youths to troop out en masse to protest. They even torched the parliament even though the government deployed military to douse tension.
Mr. Lyn Mengich, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson, the government has decided to put on hold the plan to increase the salaries of state officials. He said that the current economic conditions were put into consideration.
The government had planned to increase the salaries by 2% to 5% for all officials including judges, cabinet members and parliamentarians.
Kenyan protesters are now calling for the resignation of the president, Ruto himself.
