Oyo Election: the bitter lesson Adelabu may not learn

The Oyo election is one of the most intriguing in the country. There have been lots of drama as the exercise built up as far back as months ago. Mr. Adebayo Adelabu, the candidate of the Accord may not have learned some bitter lessons.

Adebayo Adelabu, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, had 38,757 votes to appear far behind the winner, Mr. Seyi Makinde and the runner-up Teslim Folarin. There has been one special thing about this Oyo Election.

The ex CBN deputy governor is contesting for the second time in a row. He was on the ballot in Oyo election in 2019. He used the platform of the All Progressives Congress and he performed exceedingly well even though he fell short from beating Seyi Makinde.

He had more than 300,000 votes to be closely behind Mr. Seyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party in the said Oyo election. Some analysts at that time claimed that Adebayo Adelabu would be a potential governor of the state.

He gave it another attempt, but on a different platform this time around. He failed to secure the ticket of the All Progressives Congress as Mr. Teslim Folarin proved himself much stronger for the ex banker.

He must have been convinced that he was a popular politician at least for him to get more than 300,000 votes in the last Oyo election. But he was wrong. He has now had just paltry 10 percent of what he polled in 2019.

The bitter lesson is that no politician can succeed on an unknown or an unpopular political party in the country, let alone Oyo State. It can never happen. Adelabu’s little success then hinged on the platform he used.

At least if he couldn’t increase his stake, he ought to maintain that number he secured in 2019. However, the exercise in 2023 made him one of the political flops in the history of Oyo State.

If he really intends to lead Oyo State, his dream can’t come through on the platform other than the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) or the All Progressives Congress (APC). That means he ought to get ready to leave Accord.
