There is one issue Bola Tinubu failed to clear as he promised to pay fees of the secondary school leavers. He talked amidst his struggle for presidency.
The national leader of the APC made the promise while addressing some women. He said he would pay the WASSCE fees of the children.
He believed that no children must be left behind just because they are poor. Hence, he decided to help them make the payment.
Tinubu didn’t tell Nigerians from whose purse the money would be drawn. Of course, he said if elected, he would fullfil the promise.
He ought to have told Nigerians whether the money would be paid from his own personal treasure or the money would come from government’s funds.
Truly, the Federal ministry of education regularly has its own budgets and Tinubu may want to use this avenue.
However, it is still speculative. It ought to come from the horse’s mouth. Hence, the promise ought to be well explained.
It might not be sustainable if Tinubu wants to do it alone. He shouldn’t be reminded that millions of Nigerian students write the exam every year.
The former Lagos State governor may want to use the government’s funds. He should have made this very clear to the listeners.
He actually presented the promise as if he were the one to finance it. Meanwhile, in order to avoid conflicting reports, he should make the thing clear.
