Olusegun Obasanjo: a statesman denounced by his own people

Ex president Olusegun Obasanjo has become one of the social media condemned Yoruba indigenes. The Chief has become a laughing stock and an object of ridicule among his own people in the southwest region.

The ex president attracted the ire of his own people due to most of his activities, notably the most recent one in the 2023 general elections. A conspiracy theory now spreads that he hailed from the southeastern Nigeria, an Igbo dominated region.

The All Progressives Congress Bola Tinubu ought to have got the blessings of the ex president, Olusegun Obasanjo. Both are Yoruba, and ethnicity contributes profusely to the democratic processes of the country, Nigeria.

But as he often does, the elder statesman wouldn’t consider his kinsman, who was running for the seat of power. Olusegun Obasanjo openly endorsed and showed support for Peter Obi, an Igbo man from Anambra State.

Obasanjo was on a vendetta. In 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy, the former president was snubbed by the Yoruba people. Of course, it was not that they betrayed one of their sons. In fact, the people voted massively for Mr. Olu Falae, another Yoruba man from Ondo state.

That actually touched the emotions of the former president and since that time, he has been working tirelessly against the interest of the Yoruba people. He has also been tilting towards the Igbo people.

Despite his stiff opposition against the APC candidate, Tinubu, the Yoruba people still gave their support for their son, an ex Lagos state governor. That annoyed Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo the more.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the results of the poll, and the former military head of state was disappointed that Peter Obi, his candidate, didn’t emerge.

As one of the top leaders and elders in the country, Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo ought to keep quiet and accept the results of the election. After all, he himself knew how elections used to be when he was in power. He started to call for violence.

His rhetoric while INEC was collating the results was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. The Yoruba people who had been tolerating him and his vituperation all of a sudden started condemning him.
