Deaths rocked Nigerians and top families had to mourn demises of their breadwinners or loved ones. Even most of the deaths directly affected the federal government.
The immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, can be regarded as the most powerful Nigerian who died this year. He died while serving the country as his plane crashed on 21 May, 2021. Barely few months after his appointment, he was involved in the crash.
General Attahiru took over from Tukur Buratai. His death shock the whole nation and questions were asked about the plane crash. None of the questions was later answered. His death also caused controversies because the president, Muhammadu Buhari was absent during his burial.
On 29 September, almost three months ago, the husband of the late Mrs. Dora Akunyili, Chike Akunyili was gruesomely killed by unknown gunmen. His death threw the whole country into mourning.
His late wife, Dora, was the director of the food and drug agency, NAFDAC and a former minister of information. Till this moment, the mystery behind his death is yet to be unravelled. He is one of the top Nigerians who died this year.
The Yoruba people lost a number of their sons and daughters to the cold hand of death. Mr. Yinka Odumakin, an activist and one of the top leaders of Afenifere, was pronounced dead and the whole country had to mourn the passing of the brave politician.
His wife revealed that he actually died on Friday, 2 April, 2021 but the doctor at the hospital announced his passing on Saturday, 3 April. He died at the age of 54 and he was seriously mourned by all and sundry most especially the Afenifere Group, which he led as publicity secretary.
The media industry, most especially the Nollywood industry was perplexed as Babatunde Omidina, who is popularly known as Baba Suwe breathed his last. The ace Yoruba comedian battled undisclosed sickness for years till he bowed to death on 22 November, 2021.
Some controversies also trailed his death most especially when a child of his took to the social media to argue that his late father was abandoned. Baba Suwe had been buried.
Mrs. Rachael Oniga’s death is another one too many. At the age of 64 Rachael Oniga died. The veteran actor’s death was the least expected. Even her passing caused a shock in the movie industry as fans and colleagues continuously mourn her death.
Reports have it that she died of heart related issues. She has also been buried.
