Northern States Whose IGR Can’t Pay Salaries of Workers

It’s not new that most of the 36 states of the federation rely really heavily on the allocation from the federal government. They are unable to perform their responsibilities including payment of salaries of workers without the monthly allocation from the federal government.

Kano, one of the top earners from the federal government, generates paltry N9bn throughout the first quarter of 2024 as against its salary schedule totalling N20bn within the same period of time.

Yobe, one of the most impoverished (northern) state has a financial burden of N11bn whereas it’s able to generate just N2bn, making it a pathetic dependant on the national government.

Another northern state, Kaduna is very close to generating enough and to reach a break even. It generated N13bn with N15bn paid as salaries to workers. The same thing happened to Bauchi State in the northeastern side of the country.

Zamfara, Nassarawa, Taraba, Kogi and Jigawa are really poor and unproductive.

Kwara State is different among the northern states. It generated a huge sum of N20bn whereas its salary expenditure was N11bn. This means without federal allocation, Kwara will be able to sustain itself.
