A former speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has slammed the northern leaders and emphasized that the incumbent President Bola Tinubu is not the problem of the north. He argued that the region was in power for 40 out of 64 years since independence and nothing to show for it.
The northern elite have been really critical of Tinubu mostly because of the appointment he has made and currently the issue of tax reform.
Key northern leaders including Borno Governor Babagana Zulum and Ali Ndume have said that the bills would impoverish the northern region and that northern states wouldn’t be able to pay salaries.
In an event on Friday, Dogara rebuked the leaders by saying that the 40 years north has spent in power amounts to nothing.
At the event, themed “Church and Society: Tax Reforms and Matters Arising”, Dogara addressed issues surrounding governance and development; the former Speaker lamented that Arewa political leaders mismanaged opportunities to lead Nigeria for over 40 years, leaving the region plagued with poverty and underdevelopment.
“We are all northerners, and it should be made clear that President Tinubu or the South is not our problem. They have not come to cheat the North. That is out of the question. Some are claiming that Yoruba people are getting appointments, but let’s reflect. We ruled this country for over 40 years when northerners were in power. What did we achieve? The North remains the same, impoverished by our own leaders”.
