No 2023 elections unless Kanu is released – Ohanaeze

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide, a sociocultural organisation responsible for the interests of Igbo people, has claimed that there wouldn’t be presidential election unless Nnamdi Kanu is released from custody.

Kanu was arrested mid last year and he was immediately dragged into the country from Kenya. He has been visiting the court since that time on allegations of sponsoring terrorism. Kanu calls for establishment of Biafra republic.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the General Secretary of the association, said that the Igbo people should get ready for a tougher and more horrible time next year. In the statement, the secretary told the people that neither the All Progressives Congress nor the People’s Democratic Party would be willing to give its ticket to Igbo politicians.

Actually, Mr. Anyim Pius Anyim has shown interest in the PDP’s ticket, and he has been commended by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo. But the group is not optimistic about the Igbo presidency, which is one of the main agitations right now.

The group said, “President Muhammadu Buhari should release Nnamdi Kanu in 2022, to authorize peace, security and stability to return to the southeastern Nigeria”.

Kanu’s case has dominated Nigerian politics. The Indigenous People of Biafra has been asking residents of southeast to observe sit-at-home so as to call for Kanu’s release from custody. The government has maintained its stance to keep the Biafra leader.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo warned that if Buhari listens to the Arewa Consultative Forum and Northern Elders Forum, there would be no general elections in the eastern region in 2023. Recall that most of northern elite oppose the release of Kanu.

The secretary of the group explained that the 2023 presidency favours southeast, but it would be scuttle by some politicians outside the region. He warns of the consequences of doing that. The emphasis is that there wouldn’t be election without Nnamdi Kanu.
