Nigerians query Tinubu over reckless spending

Nigerians have questioned the unnecessary and reckless spending of the administration of President Bola Tinubu. The Buhari’s successor has asked millions of Nigerians to bear with him as he fixes the dying economy of the country.

He removed subsidy from petroleum, subsidy is a programme which enabled Nigerians to buy the essential commodity at affordable costs. The citizens of the country reasoned with him and there was no resistance safe from sme media quarters and subsidy is gone.

However, rather than cutting costs of governance and making his government prudent in its spending, the administration is rather reckless and wasteful in how it spends the taxpayers’ hard-earned money.

Shortly after the inauguration of the current National Assembly, each senator received a car worth N160,00,000 (one hundred and sixty million naira). There are 109 senators in the upper chamber of the assembly. Each member of the House of Representatives also got their own car.

There has been no effort at the end of the political leaders to offer sacrifice as they ask millions of Nigerians to do. Nigerians on social media vented their spleen on the platforms, the main ways the government gets feedbacks from them. The criticised the plan to get the cars.

At the end of the day, the federal lawmakers won. They got the vehicles, which one of them claimed were necessary because of the bad roads of the day. He said it as if the roads became bad due to negligence or fault of the people.

As if that’s not enough, the Bola Tinubu’s Government sponsored 422 people to COP28 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. The earlier reports from the media including Online Parrot News were that the federal government under President Bola Tinubu sponsored 1,411 delegates.

Criticism started, there were arguments forth and back. Supporters and sycophants of the present administration defended the president saying the figure was fabricated by the opposition.

After up to 48 hours, the presidency deemed it fit and necessary to react to the complaint of the people. The administration said it sponsored just 422 people to the event in Dubai and it gave a breakdown of delegates from ministries, departments, office of the president and his vice.

The figure that Bola Tinubu’s Government released could be disputed. In fact, Arise TV has come up with a counterargument. That’s not the case. It’s no doubt that the government has paved the way for misgivings.

Granted that the actual number is 422, it’s still far too much for a country that is struggling to revive its economy and stop the soaring inflation. The taxpayers’ money shouldn’t be wasted for a yearly programm, whose outcomes, unfortunately, don’t affect the common Nigerians out there.

As if that’s not enough, the president and his government now intend to renovate the offices of the vice president. He has one each in Lagos and Abuja. According to the Federal Capital Territory minister Nyesom Wike, a sum of N15,000,000,000 (fifteen billion naira) would be spent on the renovation.

It’s not that a brand new office is required. The main project that will gulp that huge sum of money is merely renovation. Meanwhile, the 2024 budget rely on loans to the tune of billions of dollars.

It simply seems that the sacrifice would be solely on the heads of hapless and helpless Nigerians, who appear to be too trampled upon to act.
