Nigerian students fail to conduct credible elections amidst themselves

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the umbrella body for all Nigerians students, has failed to conduct credible, free and fair elections amidst themselves.

There was a serious violence at the secretariat of the association on Thursday and Friday. A faction of the association accused President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, of making attempts to impose a candidate on the association. The two factions exchanged gunfire making some members land in the hospital.

According to the statement personally signed by the outgoing president of the association, Usman Umar Baranba, the elections were supposed to hold between 27 to 30 November, 2023. However, the CPC failed to do the needful. That has forced the president to dissolve the committee charged with the responsibility of conducting the poll.

CPC stands for Convention Planning Committee.

The seat of the president had been zoned to the south-south geopolitical zone and Pedro Obi Chibuzor, who is a PhD student of Delta State University is competing with Lucky Omonefe are the leading candidates.

The president said in a circular, “As enshrined in the constitution and charter of demand of NANS, the date assigned for CPC to conduct convention which is 27th to 30th November 2023 has elapse and are still not ready to conduct convention.”

Shootings started on Thursday and continued on Friday at the venue of the convention. In fact, the venue was very close to the defense headquarters, which didn’t care about happenings at the place.
