Lamido Sanusi Returns To Power After Four Years

The deposed Emir of Kano Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has returned to power after the embarrassing dethronement.

The last governor of the state, Umar Ganduje, was not comfortable with the rhetoric of the former emir, who was at a time the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Therefore, he deposed the powerful northern leader in a move that further proves how governors use their political power to undermine the traditional leaders.

Shortly after his dethronement, Sanusi went to a remote village in Nassarawa and he was later in Lagos State. Since that time he has kept a low profile until the new Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf took over from Ganduje.

Governor Yusuf was working on the new law of the Kano State House of Assembly, which repealed the law Ganduje’s government made to create four new Emirates from the powerful Kano Emirate. The new law abolished the four Emirates and hitherto removed the four emirs installed by Ganduje.

“With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Malam Sanusi Lamido,” Abba said.

“This bill in its entirety has abrogated the establishment of the five new Emirates in the state and reverted to the former status of a single Emir in Kano which we inherited since the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio,” said Majority Leader Lawal Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa after the repeal was passed on Thursday.
