Minimum Wage: NLC Condemns 36 Governors, SGF Akume over N60,000

The Nigeria Labour Congress has reacted to the rejection of the proposal for a new minimum wage. On Friday, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) said that the N60,000 proposed is unrealistic.

On Tuesday, the labour unions and the federal government signed a deal which would make sure the government pay above N60,000. That made the unionists call off the industrial action (indefinite strike).

The labour reacted through the spokesperson to condemn the governors over their rejection. Comrade Benson Upah said that the NLC is not aware of any offer for N60,000.

He said, “More governors are willing to pay a reasonable rate, but those who are lawbreakers should be recognised as lawbreakers. It will not make their treasury richer or bigger; it will only end up impoverishing the state because workers’ wages drive the economy of most states.”

According to Upah, “It is very unfortunate that the SGF is instigating the governors or using his office to discourage the government from paying the new minimum wage proposed by the NLC.”

“Our concern is not at the pleasure of the governor or government officials; it is a necessity, a need.”

The labour congress imagemaker said, “Those who claim they cannot afford to pay the minimum wage can’t even give such money to their side chicks; they give them more than that.”
