Ohanaeze Takes Further Steps to Secure Kanu’s Release
The largest Igbo sociocultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has taken more serious steps to secure the release of the incarcerated leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu from the prison.
Kanu was extradited to Nigeria while ex president Muhammadu Buhari was in power. He was accused of treason and for jumping bail. And he has been in and out of the courtrooms in the past two years.
Efforts by the leaders and groups in the Igbo land to bring Kanu out of the custody have yielded no result. However, the sociocultural organisation is ready to become a surety for the bail of the IPOB leader, whose followers and foot soldiers declare sit-at-home in the southeastern region.
Mr. Aguochia Ogbonnia, the chairman of a adhoc committee in the House of Representatives, said, “Two points I am trying to make. One is to thank them and secondly to respond to the call made by Ohanaeze Ndigbo led by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu to release Nnamdi Kanu. The third one is that we are prepared to guarantee that Nnamdi Kanu will be of the required conduct,” the Ohanaeze spokesman stated.”
The incarceration of the IPOB leader has caused lots of devastating effects on the socioeconomic wellbeing of the region. The sit-at-home seriously hampers the development of the area while lives and properties are lost in the course of enforcing the order to sit at home on Mondays.
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu even though the organisation doesn’t denounce the agitation for the establishment of the Biafra Republic, the main issue in Kanu’s ordeal.
Kanu himself has called for an end to the regular sit-at-home orders which adversely affect the region. Yet he is still convinced that the way to go is the Biafra Republic. The Ohanaeze Ndigbo is now ready, however, to take the risk of being the surety.
