There have been growing speculations that the All Progressives Congress in the eastern region is targeting Abia state governor, Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu. And by the day his purported defection is gaining momentum.
The All Progressives Congress successfully took Mr. Ben Ayade, Cross River State governor and Bello Matawalle, Zamfara State governor last year. In late 2020 the APC got Mr. Dave Umahi.
The All Progressives Congress seems not to be ready to relax as its leaders are still reaching out to the remaining PDP governors. The step being taken by the APC leaders may hitherto cripple the People’s Democratic Party at all levels.
Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu has visited the state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu. The visit couldn’t be disconnected from the rumoured defection of the governor. And Kalu himself had led the state in the past. And he has consistently asked Igbo people to join the ruling party.
He was the one who welcomed the ex Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika into the APC. He doesn’t appear to be interested in the PDP right now. Hence, his visit to the state governor might be to further convince Okezie Ikpeazu.
A special assistant to the governor described how Ikpeazu welcomed the former state governor (1999 to 2007) to the governor’s lounge. He explained that the visit didn’t relate with partisan politics and that there shouldn’t be insinuations that Ikpeazu would defect.
Most of the politicians would need to buckle down right now and look for ways to prepare for their interests. Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu will need to enlarge his tentacles in the APC, while Ikpeazu will like to move on politically.
The question that needs an answer is: will the APC take Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu as well? Then how many governors will be on ground for the PDP ahead of 2023 general elections?
