Insecurity worsens under President Bola Tinubu

Citizens of Nigeria complained, lamented and begged ex president Muhammadu Buhari due to lingering insecurity. Kidnappers, bandits, militants enjoyed their days and operations and they cashed out from the Nigerian victims.

They hoped for respite as the incumbent President Bola Tinubu assured them with a mantra, “Renewed Hope”. He told them that he would handle insecurity and make economy blossom. While his administration keeps telling Nigerians that economy would still do well, there doesn’t seem to be any assurance or hope of better security.

Take for instance, the Eastern Security Network and the Indigenous People of Biafra have stepped up their activities for actualisation of Biafra Republic. They have got effrontery to attack security personnel by laying ambush. The personnel too staged a reprisal on communities in Imo State.

Ebonyi, Abia and other southeastern states are witnessing recurrent attacks and clashes between the self-rule agitators and security agencies. Kidnapping is also pervasive in that axis.

When Muhammadu Buhari was in power, bandits held several communities, towns, local government areas in northern Nigeria to ransom. The president, a northerner, couldn’t do anything to curtail the rampant attacks on defenceless people in the northern region despite his military background.

Insecurity has fully returned to north. Recently, some armed men attacked military men in Niger State. They also succeeded in downing a helicopter in the same state having killed lots of the officers. Nothing was done, no arrest was made and the whole country decided to move on while the armed men continue to enjoy their largesse.

Bandits have succeeded in kidnapping about 30 students in a tertiary institution in Katsina State. This reminds Nigerians of similar incidents in Borno and neighboring Yobe State. Leah Sharibu is still held hostage by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The National Assembly had summoned service chiefs including Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and others. The house called them to discuss the worsening insecurity.

Ahmed Lawan-led House of Senate invited the then chiefs while Buhari was in power. There was no desirable outcome and Nigerians were left to the mercy of “unknown gunmen”, bandits, kidnappers, etc.

President Bola Tinubu addressed the country on Sunday to mark the occasion of the anniversary of the country’s independence. He could have highlighted his achievements in tackling insecurity, but he didn’t. There was, of course, not to talk about. Insecurity is on the rise.
