The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned the Central Bank of Nigeria to do something about the scarcity of cash in the country.
Mr. Mahmood Yakubu led a team of ten commissioners of the electoral body to have a talk with the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele in Abuja.
INEC specifically asked the apex bank to do something about the scarcity so as to save the 2023 general elections. There are speculations in some quarters that the crisis is aimed at frustrating the general elections.
The INEC chairman stated that the commission would need some cash for its activities during the general elections.
In his response, Emefiele didn’t state how long it will take the apex bank to address the scarcity crisis which has ultimately caused protests in several parts of Nigeria.
However, the Central Bank of Nigeria governor assured INEC that if the Commission needs cash for its service providers, the CBN would make it available.
Emefiele added, “If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment.”
