A very close ally and partner of self acclaimed Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, has planned to cause more unrest in the southwest region of the country. Prof. Banji Akintoye has shown readiness for the upheaval.
Mr. Sunday Igboho fully began his agitation almost a year ago when he asked the Fulani herdsmen to immediately vacate Igangan Village and by extension all the Yoruba land.
He accused them of causing security threats, killing and kidnapping of the people.
The matter got to a head when he stormed the town to execute his order. The aftermaths of the whole saga included razing down of the house and other properties of Seriki Fulani in the community.
Sunday Igboho was arrested in Benin Republic when he was attempting to fly to Germany to seek asylum. He has been in the custody since that time while efforts are still ongoing to extradite him into the country.
Mr. Sunday Igboho and the head of Ilana Omo Odua, Prof. Akintoye asked for a republic for the Yoruba people. This contravenes some provisions of the country. But while Igboho remains behind the bar, Akintoye wants to proceed.
The academic has argued that there wouldn’t be any election in Yoruba land this year, 2022. The Independent National Electoral Commission ought to conduct election in Osun and Ekiti State. But Akintoye says there wouldn’t be any poll.
Remember that there was an initial threat to the Anambra State gubernatorial election late 2021. The INEC was not deterred and the Federal Government had to deploy more security personnel to the state.
The call that the professor and agitator has made right now is capable of putting the southwest and Yoruba land at arm’s length. Of course, there will be more security presence in the whole area.
The incarcerated Sunday Igboho has distanced himself from the plan. He excused himself through his spokesperson. He doesn’t want to be a part of the destabilization.
