How PDP is covertly backing Buhari over naira policy

The PDP is apparently backing the president, Muhammadu Buhari, over the naira policy that is rocking the country at this moment. The People’s Democratic Party understands what is at stake and the party is playing along with the president.

Since the hullabaloo has started, the opposition party is totally silent and has refused to even identify or sympathize with the people of the country, who are seriously undergoing pains.

The issue of new naira notes has sparked violent protests across the country. Lots of commercial banks have suffered from violence including attacks on their staffers.

Soldiers were deployed to some parts of Lagos State o Saturday to quell the protests which turned violent. The protesters, who are mainly youths, are frustrated by the lingering scarcity of naira notes. Several still have thousands or millions of the old naira notes at hand.

The policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria should have been a big opportunity for the PDP to rigorously campaign against the All Progressives Congress and the current government. But it all looks like the opposition party isn’t concerned.

There can’t be other language: the PDP is complicit in the saga. The least the opposition party ought to do is to keep quiet. And neutrality doesn’t have a space in politics. If the PDP can’t join the masses and campaign against the president and APC, there is only one thing.

It is not possible for the PDP to be here and there. It should be at one particular side. And its silence as far as this matter is concerned shows it supports the Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Mr. Atiku Abubakar, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had talked only once about the lingering issue. When the initial deadline was close, he urged the CBN and the FG to shift the date further. And since then, it has been silence.

What game is the PDP playing? Of course, the party could have used the matter for its own benefits by criticizing the APC and Buhari’s government. The PDP ought to have cashed in on the draconian policy of the government.

The most worrisome of the issue is the sheer disregard for the Supreme Court. That should make the PDP react and gain more ground. But the PDP would rather be silent, and that’s acceptability of the policy.

The Supreme Court ruled that it’s wrong to ban the old naira notes. But neither the FG nor the CBN give a damn about the decision of the court. The PDP too will rather stand by and watch while events unfold.

It’s crystal clear (from the silence of the PDP) that the opposition is rather covertly backing President Muhammadu Buhari over the policy. What the party will gain from this remains unclear.
