How Oyo State lost 3 kings within a month

Oyo State has lost three monarchs in just two months. The latest on the spree of demises of top monarchs came in the early hours of Sunday, 2 January, 2022. The state was thrown into another round of mourning. 

The passing of Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1, is the latest. The traditional ruler, who ascended the throne on 4 March, 2016 breathed his last today. He died at the elite University College Hospital, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. 

At the age of 93, Oba Adetunji died and he would be buried at 4pm today in compliance with the Islamic rites. He was the 41st king of the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State. 

The state governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde has reacted to the death of the king. He described it as a shock and that the deceased king would be sorely missed most especially his vast of experience. 

Likewise, the death of the Soun of Ogbomosho was shocking to the people of Oyo State. Among the key towns or cities in Oyo State is Ogbomosho, which hosts the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. 

Oba Oladunni Oyewumi, Ajagungbade III also died on a Sunday. His passing was announced on 12 December, 2021. He was 95 until his demise. And he was also one of the longest serving monarch till his death. He was enthroned on 24 October, 1973.

The top monarch from Ogbomosho axis of Oyo State was born on 27 May, 1926. 

Oyo State has also lost the Asigangan of Igangan kingdom. The monarch also died late last year. Oba Abdul-Azeez Adewuyi, Aribiyan II, was pronounced dead in the early hours of Tuesday, 21 December, 2021. 

Ibarapa North Local Government Area chairman, Mr. Lateef Akorede, broke the news of the passing of the king on his Facebook page. And while mourning Olubadan of Ibadan, the Oyo State governor mentioned the three monarchs.
