How NIN upsets UTME candidates again

0

The National Identity Number, NIN upsets UTME candidates for yet another time in a row. The national document is part of requirements for the registration.

Candidates who want to sit 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination need to present the 11 digits on the NIN document before they can proceed. Simply put, there won’t be registration for them unless they submit the number.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) introduced the policy in 2021. The identity card is compulsory for all Nigerians. Hence, JAMB asked the applicants to present NIN.

However, there was a national outcry across the country last year. It was at a time people were rushing to enroll for the NIN. The examination body then suspended the use of NIN.

Since that time, there had been nothing much to put necessary things in place for the smooth running and inclusion of NIN. Nevertheless, JAMB brought the whole plan again.

Applicants or candidates are to send their NIN to 66019 or 55019 via Short Message Service (SMS) to generate profile code. This is an herculean task for both students and their parents.

There have been several responses from the service providers. Only a handful of the applicants get the code. Others have spent up to a thousand naira to get the code. Of course, an SMS costs N50.

That has not been the only situation. The candidates will also need to send a mail to one particular address to hasten up linking their NIN to the NIMC portal.

One thing is to enroll for the NIN. Another thing is to have the NIN linked or confirmed. The linking or confirmation can take up to four months. This is worrisome.

Parents, teachers and guardians are concerned because the NIN upsets UTME candidates one year after its introduction by the examination body.
