Mr. Mai Mala Buni intended to block APC convention from holding. Some concrete documents show how the Yobe State governor worked to delay the exercise.
Buni and other top members and leaders of the party took over the affairs of the party following the sacking of Adams Oshiomhole. He was to head the caretaker committee of the party.
The National Executive Council of the party assigned the committee to conduct a new convention. And going to two years after that decision, there has been no exercise.
And the Committee has failed to come up with specific arrangements on how to conduct the exercise. Interestingly, the committee couldn’t solve several internal crises in the party.
A court paper shows that one Salisu Umoru dragged the party to an Abuja Court. Umoru, the complainant in the suit, wanted the Federal High Court to stop the convention.
The APC was not the defendants and respondents in the suit. Along with the party were Mr. Mai Mala Buni himself and the Independent National Electoral Commission. The suit was dated 18 November, 2021.
Of course, the presiding judge, Bello Kawu, granted the prayers including restraining the APC from conducting the convention. Specifically, the court said that the exercise shouldn’t hold in January, February or any other time.
The claimant, Umoru, was represented by H. S. Danjuma, while the first and second respondents had A. M. Adoyi as their counsel. Of course, Mai Mala Buni was aware of everything.
The Yobe State governor kept mute, perhaps waiting for the appropriate time to let the court order be served on the party and INEC. There has been rather sluggishness to conduct the convention.
The national caretaker committee had initially fixed February for the convention. However, no specific date was chosen at that time. Even there was no venue.
All of a sudden, the convention was moved to March. The top echelons in the APC must have seen the approach of Buni. Normally, he ought to expedite actions towards the exercise.
The convention ought to come earlier before the primary elections. But Buni intended to block APC convention the exercise. Main reasons for his counterproductive steps may not be immediately known.
