Residents had to escape to the Zamfara State capital, Gusau, when armed bandits struck their villages. They killed, kidnapped and stole money and other valuable from the locals in the villages.
The bandits killed ten persons and abducted 33. They operated for several hours without any security personnel or officers to interrupt their activities. The lucky people observed that there was no more security, hence, they relocated to the capital for safety.
Some residents of the villages talked to the Punch Newspaper and explained how the attacks were carried out. The newspaper quoted Malam Shehu Kura, who gave a concise report of how it all happened. According to him, the bandits operated for hours searching every household looking for foods and other valuables.
While talking about the victims, he revealed, “They abducted 10 women from Kura village, nine from Bayawuri, seven from Gana and another seven from Doma”.
The witness, who talked with the Punch Newspaper, said that the people, who escaped, had to sleep in the open. Weather is really harsh these days due to the harmattan. He said, “Most of us sleep outside or in open places despite the harsh condition of the harmattan because we have no other alternative.”
Banditry is rife in northwestern region most especially in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kaduna. Most of the states record attacks at least weekly. The federal government has not been able to curtail the bandits activities for so long.
