Gabon: How Bola Tinubu Reacts to the Coup d’etat

The Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu has reacted to the latest development in Gabon. A group of military men have taken over power by ousting Ali Bongo, who has been ruling the central African country since 2009.

Bola Tinubu is the chairman of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS), a regional bloc in Africa. Gabon isn’t within the jurisdiction of ECOWAS unlike Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

ECOWAS, being led by the Nigerian president, has threatened to use military force in Niger Republic if the junta fails or refuses to reinstate Bazoum.

President Bola Tinubu reacted to the Gabon coup through Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale on Wednesday. The adviser said that Tinubu is watching the issue with “deep concern for the country’s social political stability and at the seeming autocratic contention apparently spreading across different regions of our beloved continent.”

The president further reaffirmed his commitment to rule of law and constitutional resolutions to all electoral dispute. Gabon president Ali Bongo was reelected for a third term on Saturday. Oppositions have rejected the results of the poll for lack of credibility and transparency.

The special adviser further said, “To this end, the President is working very closely and continues to communicate with other Heads of State in the African Union towards a comprehensive consensus on the next steps forward with respect to how the power in Gabon will play out and how the continent will respond to contagious autocracy we have seen spread across our continent”.

Bola Tinubu has insisted that there is no alternative to democracy and rule of law. He had fought military regime when Nigeria was in the shackles of the military men.

Only the African Union can interfere in Gabon. And the president wants to collaborate with the continental organisation.
