No power will soon be left for Rivers Governor Fubara

As more events begin to unravel, Rivers State Governor Simi Fubara will be left with no power or influence in the political matters of the oil rich state. It’s now glaring that he is a mere figurehead in the state and the real political power doesn’t belong to him.

It took the intervention of the president, Bola Tinubu, to stop the impending impeachment of the governor. FCT minister Nyesom Wike accused Fubara of betrayal. He highlighted all he did to make Fubara become the state governor.

As a punishment for the alleged political betrayal, Nyesom Wike deployed his loyalists, who dominate both the legislative and executive arm of the government to begin the impeach process of Fubara and to frustrate him. He had to agree to the conditions set by the president to broker peace.

Now, the Rivers State House of Assembly has stripped Fubara the power to appoint the caretaker leaders for the local government areas in the state. Governors in Nigeria often appoint caretakers for local government areas.

The appointees are loyal to the governors instead of the people who ought to have elected them in the first instance. Now the Rivers State House of Assembly has stopped Simi Fubara from appointing them and there is no resistance from him.

9 commissioners willingly resigned from his cabinet when the political crises started in the state. They are loyalists of Nyesom Wike, who are answerable to the former governor instead of their current boss, Fubara. They were sworn in and have resumed their posts.

The governor ought to decide who works for him. He has become so handicapped that he can’t decide what to do, whom to appoint, papers to sign and some other decisions. He is literally a caretaker governor himself who is responsible to the former governor Nyesom Wike, who is now the FCT minister.

The 2024 Budget he presented to the 5-member Rivers State House of Assembly has been condemned and declared illegal by a court. What exactly does Fubara have power over? The state finances are not exclusively for him. He may soon become a redundant governor.
