Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has expressed his displeasure over the state of public schools in the state. He took over the affairs of the state less than a month ago and he has opened the eyes of the public to the decadence in the administration of Godwin Obaseki, his predecessor.
Mr. Okpebholo was at some of the schools on Wednesday to see one of the causes of the falling standard of education in the south-south state, one of the oil rich states in Nigeria. He shared some pictures of the visit on his X account.
Okpebholo said that he was heartbroken seeing the state of dilapidated buildings. Public schools receive little attention and most of the states allocate negligible percentage of their budgets to education. The little is often embezzled leaving the schools without facilities and teachers.
The governor said, “Today, I visited two schools in Benin and was heartbroken by the state of their dilapidated buildings. No child should have to learn in such conditions—it’s a painful reality we must change and a reminder of why we must prioritize education.
“During my campaign, I promised to rebuild our schools and give our children the foundation they deserve. These visits reaffirm my commitment to that promise. We will immediately begin assessing these schools and ensuring the necessary steps are taken to restore them. Together, we will create a brighter future for every child in Edo State.”
