Supreme Court Affirms Cross River Governor’s Victory In Election. Otu beat Onor, who was the PDP governorship candidate.
The apex court has confirmed the victory of Bassey Otu victory in the Cross River State gubernatorial election held in March, 2023. The Supreme Court delivered its judgement today along with other matters.
Justice Helen Ogunwimiju who delivered the judgement on Friday said the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was a waste of time and resources.
Otu contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress and became the first governor to be elected on that platform in the south-south state.
The Peoples Democratic Party was not satisfied with the declaration made by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the party approached the tribunal and later the Court of Appeal in Lagos State.
The appeal Court dismissed the appeal both the PDP and its candidate Senator Sandy Ojang Onor. The duo then headed to the apex asking the panel to upturn the decision of the lower court. However, the Supreme Court said that the appeal lacked merit.
Hence, it threw it away and declared Otu as the duly elected governor of the state. The court also awarded fines against Onor and his party, the PDP.
