Crisis in Rivers State: What we know so far
The oil rich south-south Rivers State has come under a serious political crisis. The state is notorious for political violence, electoral riots, impunity among others. Even though no opposition party has a say in what happens in the state, the political terrain of the state has been a house of commotion.
All of a sudden, Rivers State appears in the news. Some hours ago, police fired teargas and used water canons on the state Governor Simi Fubara, who took over from Nyesom Wike.
The state governor was reportedly going to the State House of Assembly, which has also become a house for roguish politicians. The police fired teargas and water canons on his motorcade.
While the governor was struggling to find his way to the State House of Assembly complex, the speaker Edie was being removed. Perhaps the governor, Fubara was heading to the complex to nip the crisis in the bud.
Edison Ehie has emerged as the new speaker of the house. He swiftly put some of his colleagues on suspension from the house immediately. He didn’t stop at that.
The new speaker has rallied his loyalists to start the impeachment process against the governor Simi Fubara. He said, “I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Today, I stand before you as the newly elected Speaker of the 10th Assembly of Rivers State House of Assembly, humbled by the trust you have placed in me to lead our great state.”
