Can Liverpool really push Man City as Sutton predicted?

A popular pundit, Chris Sutton has expressed his opinion on Liverpool winning the English Premier League this season. Only 3 matches have been played out of a total of 38 in the league.

Sutton must have considered the doggedness of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool during the last Sunday’s encounter with Newcastle United at the St. James’s Park. 10-man side beat the host. It’s one of the masterclasses of the Reds.

The chances of Klopp’s men beating Newcastle United was low before the game started. They became lower when the host opened the score sheet. And the odds were in the lowest form when captain Virgil Van Diyk was shown the red in the first half.

It took courage for the ten men to defeat Newcastle United, one of the fastest growing teams in Europe. Liverpool solidly stood up to challenge the magpies in the super Sunday clash. They returned to Anfield with the maximum three points.

Sutton said that only Liverpool could challenge Manchester City, who now have 9 points from 3 games in the English Premier League. In the last 6 seasons, only Liverpool has been able to stop Pep Guardiola’s side from winning it all.

Liverpool were far from the title last season. They came fifth to miss out in the next UEFA Champions League. Can they now muster courage to stop Manchester City? Are the three games enough to predict what happens in the next 35 matches?

Of course, the Reds have started on a very good and serious note. They didn’t let the red card shown to Macalister against Bournemouth deter them. They went on to beat the minnows two weeks ago. Likewise the red given to the captain wasn’t enough t shake the sturdy team.

So far this season, Liverpool have played two crucial matches. They drew Chelsea, one of the six big teams, and beat Newcastle United, who can now be considered big because of their qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds have reinforced the squad with new signings including the FIFA World Cup winner Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Endo among others. Darwin Nunez, who came in from the bench to rescue his side, has upped his game. The Dutchman Cody Gakpo is also spectacular.

But the side has a porous defence. The side has conceded in all the games so far. The Frenchman Ibrahim Konate is absent due to injury and the Egyptian Mo Salah is close to leaving the team. Yet Chris Sutton is convinced that Liverpool can push Manchester City.
