Buhari also Appointed only Northerners, Tinubu Can Do Same – Shekarau
A former Kano State Governor and well respected northern politician, Ibrahim Shekarau has said that incumbent President Bola Tinubu can appoint only southerners to head the Nigeria’s security just as his predecessor Muhammadu Buhari did.
Buhari came under serious criticism when he appointed only northerners as service chiefs throughout his eight years in office. He was accused of favouritism and nepotism, accusation he didn’t deem fit to deny.
Shekarau said, “In the past, Buhari did it when his Chief of Army Staff, Director General DSS, Chief of Air Staff, DG NIA, IGP were all appointed from the North.”
President Tinubu has paid attention to southwest geopolitical zone dominated by Yoruba people to pick his service chiefs. The new Director General of the Department of State Services Adeola Ajayi, the Chief of Army Staff Taoreed Lagbaja, the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, the Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi are all Yoruba from southwest zone.
As a matter of fact, another Yoruba, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as taken over from Kayode Ariwoola as the Chief Justice of the Federation.
But Shekarau said that the appointments are no issue to the northern region. He said that the concern of the region is if the people appointed are capable to discharge their duties as expected.
“It should be a challenge to the north but it does not bother us as long as they (the appointees) are capable.
“If all his appointees are from Lagos, we will not bother. Our concern is about the development of the North. Whoever is appointed is he/she competent to do the job?” he asked.
