Babajide Sanwo-Olu has shown his naivety, fear

The incumbent Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has clearly and naively shown his fear and inexperience. The governor is seeking another term in office and he faces a stiff opposition from the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour.

The governor had it easy in the last gubernatorial election, which produced him and sent Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to the exit. Babajide Sanwo-Olu had never had it that tough. He faces a serious and determined opponent propelled by the loose Obidient movement.

Since Bola Tinubu, an ex governor of the state lost in the presidential election, Mr. Sanwo-Olu has been running from pillar to post making frantic efforts to woo the voters, who want to punish him.

Rather than being courageous, the governor, and of course the APC candidate, is running helter skelter like a headless chicken. He is even playing into the hands of the opposition who argues that he is not competent.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the release of all vehicles that LASTMA impounded. The Lagos State Transport Management Agency has become one of the most feared agencies in the commercial centre of the federation.

LASTMA arrears and fines motorists who flouts the traffic rules and regulations. The agency has impounded several vehicles and auctioned them. But when the reality started setting in, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu ordered an immediate release of all the vehicles.

That made several users of Facebook and Twitter laugh. They considered the instruction as a calculated effort to swing the minds of voters, most of whom are voting aggressively against the All Progressives Congress and its candidates.

He hurriedly visited LUTH shortly after the collision between the BRT and the train on Thursday. He didn’t only do that, but he also commanded a three-day mourning for the victims of the accident. The motive is understood.

There were several victims of the Endsars protests. Soldiers opened fires on protesters at the popular Lekki Tollgate in October, 2020. Lives were lost there. Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was reluctant to act or condemn the shooting.

The most amusing of them all is that the governor, who seeks reelection, was at an unnamed church today. He is a Christian and can attend or worship at any church he likes. But something happened that betrayed his courage and experience.

He was at the entrance of the church greeting churchgoers. He shook hands with them beaming with smiles and saluting them. That’s a very rare scene.

Evidently, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is afraid. He doesn’t want to be swept by the same tsunami that literally carried Bola Tinubu, his principal, in Lagos state. Hence, he is doing some things to bring the voters to his side.

However, the steps he is taking seem to be wrong as they only expose his naivety and fear.
